Something that is constantly being said throughout the game is the Dark Age of the Law. We find out that there is an actual bomb that will explode and the case ends with the bomb actually exploding. Turnabout Countdown has us trying to figure out who killed Candice Arme and who also planted a bomb that blew up part of the courthouse with Juniper as the main suspect. Phoenix is back and he’s just as fierce as he once was. Phoenix is sporting a new suit and has a bit of a hair change. While Athena isn’t doing so hot in court, which doesn’t make sense but I’ll elaborate on it at the end of this review, Phoenix Wright makes his hot return into the courtroom. Athena is still fairly new to the world of being an attorney so it’s fair that she’s nervous. We see Apollo sport a new look, akin to a pirate really, but he’s still his loud self. We have a nervous Athena needing to defend her childhood friend Juniper because Apollo is too injured to do so. We have the first case, Turnabout Countdown. Out of all of the gimmicks the Mood Matrix is my favorite. The Mood Matrix is really cool as a gimmick as you’re trying to find the true emotions behind testimonies as well as get really cool visuals that go with it. With this, she uses her necklace, Widget, and create the Mood Matrix. Athena’s gimmick is that she can hear people’s true emotions when they speak with her empathetic hearing. Athena is a young attorney and she’s one of my favorite characters in the whole series. The new gimmick this time comes with the newest attorney for the Wright Anything Agency is Athena Cykes. This is done as a way for you to really understand everything that happened in the case and come up with the decisive answer. There’s no penalty for answering wrong, but it can provide some funny dialogue. The attorney will ask a question and there’ll be different options. There’s also a really cool moment in every case, towards the end, where whoever the attorney is will break down everything you know to get the conclusive answer. Say you’ve pressed everything and you’re just really confused as to what it is that you need to present, your assistant or whoever is the attorney will say something that will prompt you to present or press on a certain statement to advance further. You will actually get some help this time around. In court, if you’re really confused as to what to do or what to press. Aside from that, there’s nothing much else in terms of new mechanics. It adds to the investigation and I’m glad that it exists. So you actually can look at crime scenes at different angles which is really nice. With the new 3D models, environments are also in 3D. Once you’re done investigating in a room, the characters will let you know that there’s nothing else to investigate. There’s also a checklist of things you’ll need to do which is a good reminder. Instead of having to go through multiple rooms just to go somewhere, you just go there with no issues. Investigation phases are also a lot better and streamlined. The voices sound pretty good and I’m absolutely thrilled with how amazing the game looks if I’m being honest. However, in this game there’s a lot more voice acting. There’s not a lot of voice acting in the original trilogy and Apollo Justice other than the Objection, Hold It, and Take That clips so I didn’t find it necessary. Something that I didn’t really touch on in the past games is the voice acting. We even get anime cutscenes that look pretty good as well. The music is updated as well, we have returning tracks, but they are all orchestrated and sound amazing. Characters are still very expressive and memorable. Instead of sprites, we have 3D models that work just as well as the sprites did. With the transition of going onto the 3DS a lot things changed for the Ace Attorney series. So I was absolutely excited to find out that the Ace Attorney series was going to get another installment. I never thought this game would come out during the time because I thought the series was going to end with Apollo Justice. We’ve come into the Nintendo 3DS age of the Ace Attorney games.
